Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has tapped Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill to raise funds for his country’s military effort against aggressor Russia.
The star has been named an ambassador for Ukraine’s UNITED24 fundraising platform, the move was announced on Thursday. Hamil will be properly assisted in raising funds to purchase drones for the Ukrainian military.
gave Star Wars The icon was introduced as the latest ambassador for UNITED24, which has also included other celebrities, during an online call between Hamill and Zielinski. The purpose of the military program is to purchase new drones and repair and replace older ones, marking each new model with the donor’s name.
“Light will triumph over darkness,” Zielinski said in a statement Thursday. “I believe that, our people believe that. Thank you for taking on this difficult mission of being the first ambassador to help Ukraine raise funds for an army of drones to support our defenders. It’s really important!”
Hamill joins previously announced ambassadors including Liev Schreiber, Barbra Streisand, the band Imagine Dragons and athletes Andrey Shevchenko and Elina Svitolina.
“I know for sure that Ukrainians need drones to protect their land, their freedom and the values of the entire democratic world,” Hamill said in his statement. “Now is the best time for everyone to come together and help Ukraine stand up in this war with the evil empire.”
According to the Ukrainian government, the UNITED24 program has so far raised $180 million from international supporters.
