Just 2 out of 3 users who put their Xbox in standby mode will cost nearly $500 million in the US alone. Xbox ships system updates frequently, as one of the previous quality of life features gave players the option to mute the Xbox startup sound. Although, the new Xbox update is something that not only gamers can support, but also those who are concerned about the environment, or just their electricity bills. Tom Warren shared on Twitter that the Xbox update will include a power usage screen, which shows “Energy Saver” and “Standby” as “Shutdown” for a better understanding of what each mode actually does. ” and changed to “sleep”. The amount of power an Xbox console will use is now dependent on each mode, and this should allow players to make more informed decisions about whether the feature is worth the extra money on their energy bill.
The power saving update will first roll out to those who are part of the Xbox Insider program, but it’s suspected that it will be rolled out to the rest of the public in the near future. According to PureXbox, “Shutdown” mode uses 26 times less energy than “Standby” mode, which should add more light to this power analysis with this update. The PS5 Rest Mode feature reportedly had issues, which has given players more incentive to not use it.
Xbox Quality of life is looking at further improvements, such as a new Xbox storage option being tested. However, in the case of the new power consumption mode, players must choose whether the quality of life feature that comes with “standby” usage is worth the increased energy bills and impact on the environment. Thanks to the update, users will be able to make that decision better.
