A factory-sealed original 4GB iPhone from 2007 sells for a ridiculous amount at a recent auction.
A rare factory sealed and never activated original iPhone Sold at auction for about $40,000, netting the seller a net profit of $38,740. Apple’s iPhone 14 and 14 Pro Recently launched with a price tag of over $1,000 but the original iPhone in 2007 Retailing for just $600 (or around $860 with inflation). Yearly iterations and improvements have reduced the market for used iPhones to the point where their value is no more than the value of their contents.
The original 2007 iPhone was a risky gamble for Apple in the era of flip phones. Smartphones were not commonplace in 2007 and the idea of attaching console controllers to play streaming games on a mobile device was pure science fiction. With just 4 gigabytes of storage and a handful of preloaded apps, the original version is a relic of a bygone era in iPhone technology. When the iPhone first hit the market, touchscreen phones were a leap forward in technology as no other product at the time matched its ease of use.
Given the technological leaps that have taken place in the 15 years since the original iPhone was released, a recent auction ended with a shocking result. A factory-sealed 2007 iPhone with no aftermarket stickers or UPCs sold for just $39,339.60. While a recent survey found that Americans are willing to go into debt for a new iPhone, the nearly $40k price tag for an iPhone is ridiculous.
According to LCG Auctions, the compatibility and rarity of the factory sealed first-generation iPhone contributed to the astronomical price. About $10,000 was stopped before the last few days before the bidding stopped. Apple products sell at a premium, the infamous $19 MacBook cleaning cloth being an extreme example, but an iPhone Selling a car with a 2 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi capabilities is again ridiculous. An earlier auction of sealed first-generation iPhones closed at around $30,000.
With the inevitable advancements in technology and the giant leaps in consumer electronics over the last 15 years, the collectibles market of the future will be filled with similar oddities. How much could a new Apple Watch resell in another 15 years? For that matter, it’s been 7 years since the original Apple Watch went on sale, so how long will sealed versions be available for auction?
